Matt Borghi – Olagra
Olagra. This is the first release dressed in packaging printed on the new MBMD letterpress. This is the most personal recording I’ve ever done, and because of that’s it’s been three years in the making. I started it in November ’03, and with various folks worked on other parts over the last three years. I’ve finally wrapped it up. This is a different kind of record for me. There’s a lot of psych folk in this record and also a healthy dose of, what I’ve taken to calling, microsymphonies… You can see a little photo gallery of the printing process here…

Matt Borghi- The Phantom Light
Limited edition of block print sleeve sold out. The Phantom Light is a work that’s comprised four compositions with titles derived from some of the most remote lighthouses on the northern Great Lakes. 1. Ile Aux Gales The works are inspired by sailor’s tales of being adrift on The Great Lakes during storms, and catastrophic weather. Sailors, looking out on the horizon for a sign of life, a light of hope, aimed their ships towards the safety of these phantom lighthouses hoping to get to a safe harbor. Often times these phantom lighthouses just lead to a rocky shoal and a watery death. These “phantom” lights have been a thing of myth for as long as The Great Lakes freshwater seas have been sailed. In many ways, The Phantom Light is a sequel to Huronic Minor, as Great Lakes lore, and Matt Borghi’s own experiences on The Great Lakes were the creative impetus for this work. The Phantom Light was initially being sold in a limited edition of 30, hand-packaged, hand-numbered CDs. Ashes consists of a single long-form, low-volume listening track. It’s based on a series of paintings that Matt completed while listening to the rough mixes of the recording that later became Ashes. The aural inspired the visual, and the visual further inspired the completed aural; because of that, the first forty copies of this release are going to come with a hand-numbered, autographed original painting from the series, approximately 4″x 6″ in shape. This work alludes to the style that Matt has been working in with his monthly downloads. Matt Borghi – ImagesThis is matt borghi’s first solo release almost three years. With the last three year’s releases geared toward concepts of meditation (2003 Muslin Bag Set, and Ashes), as well his now defunct KOSIK (ghostly international, simballrec,kikapu) project taking up his time, matt hadn’t taken the time to sit down and do a solo recording. That all changed during one serendipitous bonding session with his new Mac G5 in late October ’04. With the leaves having changed colors and laying mostly on the ground, the gales of november coming early on the michigan landscape as they always do, the creative juices were certainly flowing. This recording realized some of the sounds that matt was working on with his KOSIK project, as well as fully incorporating his passion for Philip Glass and Claude Debussy into his music. Matt feels confident that this is one of his finest sonic statements, as well as his first true incorporation of minimalism in the vein of Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Lamonte Young, and Terry Riley; deep in texture, a great meditative fabric of sounds with an occasional rhythmic element ala Reich’s Piano or Violin Phase this is matt’s most accessible, finest audio quality release to date. |

Matt Borghi – For Running TimeThis disc was the first release, recorded throughout 1998-1999, and released in 2000. For Running Time is a variety of sonic experiments that were culled, and assembled for a long-running, contemplative listen. While this disc borders more on the fringe of contemplative space music, rather than straight ambient music that Matt Borghihas become known for, this disc is certainly indicative of the many directions that Matt’s work has taken subsequent to this first release. This recording’s influences range from Tortoise, to Pink Floyd, and to Klaus Schulze-era Tangerine Dream to Ashera, and a variety of other Berlin-based Krautrock influences…

Matt Borghi – Huronic MinorMatt Borghi’s sophmore effort, released in November 2000, Huronic Minor is the first released excursion into dark ambient, or pure ambient. This is an extremely minimal, ambient release that’s chock full of atmospheric drones, and harmonically resonant chordings. Huronic Minor is conceptually-based on The Great Storm of 1913, a three-day period of storms that did more damage, and took more lives than any Great Lakes storm before or since. The song titles are based on various sequences of the storm, and articles from a variety of regional newspapers, and mariner reports of the time. Comparisons to this record might be VidnaObmana’s Projekt-era works, or even Jeff Greinke’s gritty, early industrial ambient works. |

Matt Borghi – December Impressions
December Impressions was conceived, and recorded during the spring of 2001. This is a dark, cold, and steely recording that borders more ontone poem than full LP release. The tracks are named as sequences, representing parts of the same whole, and a cohesive linear listen rather than a variety of separate tracks of the same mood. With this release there was an attempt to represent the cold Michigan winters, or at least the sound of the Michigan landscape during the dark winter m onths. While this recording is truly ambient, and contemplative in nature it’s also quite gritty and cold. This doesn’t have the warm, lush synth pad chordings that many ambient recordings are known for. Comparisons for this recording are difficult becuase there’s not a whole lot out there that sounds like it, but comparisons to Robert Rich, VidnaObmana, Alio Die, and Zoviet France might be appropriate. |

Matt Borghi – Kensington Hill/Fallen This release is a collection of two-long form works that saw their debuts as sound art pieces in the art gallery rather than on the record store shelf. Kensington Hill is a low-volume listening, long-form ambient work. Kensington Hill was taken from a textural field recording, and then produced, and convoluted until it re-emerged as a deep listening ambient work. This piece debuted at the University of Michigan’s Immedia Exhibit, an annual feature of digital arts. Falling was recorded “live” using two guitar/ laptop set-ups, one using Audio Mulch on PC, and the other running through Ableton’s LIVE on an Apple Macintosh. This piece was debuted at the Detroit Contemporary gallery, but has also been submitted to Art-In-General in New York City. Both of these tracks are of an ambient nature, and could be compared to VidnaObmana, or Brian Eno because of their long-form, highly contemplative, and spatially complimentary natures. |

Matt Borghi – Elegy for Time Elegy for Time was created around the same time as the source tracks for Matt’s collaboration with Cyber Zen Sound Engine – The Intercepted Transmissions. Elegy for Time is the most intensely personal work that Matt has created, and Matt often refers to this one as his favorite of his solo works. This work came together in December of 2001, and features only an acoustic guitar, and computer processing. Matt did more to work out the textural and compositional melodic work of this recording that any of his works that came before it. This work is extremely gritty, and is only vaguely reminiscent of the solo steel string acoustic guitar that Matt is performing with. This work features over a dozen short ambient vignettes, and is conceptually based around the human life-cycle, but only in the most poetic way. Elegy for Time has been compared, sonically, to the work of Jeff Pearce, and Robert Fripp, as well as some of the more experimental guitar-works of Michael Hedges, and the compositional stylings of Will Ackermann, Brian Head, and Leo Kotke. Elegy for Time was officially released by the Space for Music label in the summer of 2002. |

monthly download series. Some of these tracks have surfaced in various forms, but never in a collection of deep ambient like this. If you like those, then you’ll certainly like these. The packaging for this is excellent, as well. The CD comes in a jewel case with a wrap around sleeve. The sleeve has been printed with a letterpress style embossing, and the paper is a thick card stock with traces of natural fiber throughout it’s ivory coating. The ink has been delicately pressed onto the paper, and the faintness of the print is truly indicative of the wash out concept behind the recording, and the process of recording. This release also features the artwork of Tamara Loomulder. |

This edition was originally created for the Over-Weening show that was put on by Bare Bones Gallery in Lansing, MI, and Aaron Curtner. Phil Smith and Matt Borghi signed on to do sound and a sound installation for this show. The Intercepted Transmissions was borne out of a long-distance collaboration with the Texas-based duo, Cyber Zen Sound Engine. The work came to be when Matt initially created a CD of ten ambiences, and in an attempt to hear how the work might be interpreted by a variety of different artists he sent them out. A handfull of artists sent back completed tracks, but Cyber Zen Sound Engine created a full-length recording with those tracks, thus creating something that didn’t sound like either of the two artists separately, but instead a collectively different work was created in the form of The Intercepted Transmissions. …Transmissions, as it’s come to be referred, interlaces a variety of influences from IDM-like beats to contemplative ambiences, ala Steve Roach. This recording has been compared to the work of Aphex Twin, DJ Spooky, and John Serrie, as well as Robert Rich, Steve Roach, and Brian Eno. This disc was released in November, 2001. |

Moving Through is a one-hundred copy, numbered, limited edition and specially packaged collaborative work from Matt Borghi, Jason Sloan, and Brannan Lane. Jason and Brannan originally collaborated on a track, and then shelved it. Jason sent the track out to Matt for his opinion, and after letting the piece germinate for almost a year, Matt took to the task oflengthening, and completing the track for potential release. Moving Through is a low-volume listening, long-form ambient work that runs at approximately seventy minutes in length. The work is both ethereal and gritty, thus presenting a work that is truly indicative of Jason Sloan, and Brannan Lane’s solo output, but also represents that different kind of more gritty Matt Borghi ambience. This record compares to Zoviet France, VidnaObmana, Robert Rich, and Rapoon. |
